The compact Sungai bench gets its timeless beauty from its simple design and the use of high-quality natural materials. Its seat is woven from robust sea grass that can withstand heavy loads, while its frame is made from leftover branches of the teak tree that are not otherwise used in furniture production. This creates its charming appearance with the not quite regularly shaped legs and cross struts, which are a sustainable alternative to other woods.

We have deliberately chosen not to use a lacquer finish in order to emphasise the natural colour of the wood and its small imperfections. The result is a piece of furniture that not only gives your room a natural elegance, but is also practical. Sungai is versatile: place it in front of your bed, in the hallway or wherever you need a seat. It helps you and your family to put on your shoes, for example, but can also be used as an unusual console or side table.

Measurements & weight:

Length x width x height: 80x42x46 cm
Weight: 5.75 kg

Our products are artfully crafted individual pieces. They may vary slightly in size, color and shape due to the production by hand and natural variations in materials.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Main material: Seagrass

Our benches are made from plant fibers. They therefore wonderfully smell and feel like nature.

What is usually referred to as “seagrass” by basket makers is actually not an (under) water plant, but a small, palm-like plant that is widespread on sandy beaches in the tropics of Asia. The leaves of the plants, which are often cultivated by humans, are separated, cut into strips, dried and then processed by hand.

Other materials: Teak

Production site:

This bench is handmade in Java, Indonesia
When selecting our local producers, we value fair pay and good working conditions. In the factories from which we purchase our goods, we only work with adult and experienced artisans. No harmful chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. Since all work steps are done by hand, the production process hardly generates any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
